Learning To Take Breaks

If you’re a perfectionist like me then you know just how difficult it can be to slow down and take breaks! You’ve got a thousand ideas and you’d happily work on them for 16 hours a day, 7 days a week. While that may be fun for a while it always leads to burnout!

What’s Burnout?

Burnout is when you basically just feel like crap! It usually involves creative block, being super tired, and a varying level of disillusionment with your craft. You try and force yourself through your creative block to just keep working and…it fails. What if I tell you that it doesn’t have to be that way? This may seem like a super simple statement but, you need to learn to take breaks.

If you’re constantly feeling guilty for taking breaks or even just relaxing then that’s a big issue. You do not need to be working 24/7 in order to be successful, and you certainly don’t need to be forcing yourself to work when you don’t want to. If you’ve got creative block or have run out of ideas that’s perfectly fine! You just need to chill out and take a break.

What should I do?

Watch tv, draw, read a book, go on walks- do something fun. Okay so you’re an entrepreneur and you’re thinking ‘My work is my life, I don’t have time for anything else!’.

You need to make time to relax.

Work can still be a massive part of your life, but it can’t be your whole life. Having no work-life boundaries can lead to you having a complete breakdown if you ever decide to change jobs! By taking time to explore new hobbies and enjoy yourself you can improve your overall wellbeing. Plus, It’s much more efficient to just take time off and come back inspired, than it is to struggle through creating ideas.

This is…difficult?

Yeah, it can be. At first you’ll probably find yourself worrying about not working whilst taking breaks, that’s pretty common but something you need to push past. To genuinely take a break you can’t have worries about your productivity at the back of your mind. Once you truly start to relax and focus on being present you’ll feel much better.

How long should my breaks be?

As long as you need. It might be a couple of hours, or it might be a week. Last week I talked about being ungrounded for a bit, it took me two weeks to recover in total. The first week I was still trying to push myself to work, but once I started focusing on having fun everything became so much easier. Within a few days I was filled with new ideas and ambition. It might not take you as long as two weeks but you need to allow yourself time to rejuvenate.
